Social network that comes with trending topics…does it sound familiar to you?

Twitter has long been the primary destination where people go to find out what everyone is talking about right now, but it seems like they are having a rival. Starting Wednesday, Facebook will fight for real-time relevance with the release of its version of trending topics.

Trending topics will show up for select users atop the News Feed on Facebook’s mobile Web site.

Facebook’s trending topics is launching in test form to a small percentage of social-networking users on the company’s mobile Web site. Facebook confirmed the release to media.

“Today we started running a small test that displays topics trending on Facebook,” a company spokesperson told CNET – a famous technology media. “It is currently only available to a small percentage of U.S. users who use Facebook’s mobile web site (m.facebook.com) and is still in very early stages of development.”

Hot topics will appear atop the mobile News Feed and highlight people and subject matters that the social network’s 1.15 billion users are buzzing about. Members can click the banner to see what friends and strangers are saying about the topic in question.

The feature mimics Twitter’s Trending Topics in both purpose and function and is Facebook’s best shot yet at ensuring its social network isn’t forgotten as conversations swell around breaking news, television shows, and Internet memes-in-the-making.

The release closely follows the launch of embedded posts and the addition of hashtags, two efforts that also highlight Facebook’s ambition to be top of mind in all things pop culture.
